Our day started very early with a small team of helpers lighting the hangi fire in the pre-dawn darkness. As the sun began to rise, its first tentative rays began peeking over the rolling Kaipara hills, we were well on our way to completing the food preparation.
Later, with the morning well on its way, the new helpers completed the final process of laying the hangi, and then were kept warm by the embers of the fire that had served its purpose of heating the irons, as they patiently waited for the steam to do its work.
Many thanks to Wiki, Te Warana and whaea Rosie for their early morning commitment. Thanks too to all our parents who provided the vegetables, and to the many hands who helped throughout the whole process.
Today’s learning programme involved a variation of Maori Artwork including making raranga wrist bands, manu tukutuku, soap carving and waiata. The children had an enjoyable day and an tasty shared hangi lunch.
