Fakaalofa lahi atu and Hello. My name is Marie Adlam, and I am opening up a drop-in centre at my Church, the Helensville Christian Life centre. This has been a working progress for about fourteen months during the development of myself being healed. I’m passionate about wanting to help those who have had or still have thoughts of suicide or are currently feeling suicidal. This centre is for ALL ages and all Nationalities where the word ‘Bridge’ in the title represents how I will become a bridge for those in need of support. Come in and we’ll have a chat about what I can do for you and how you can receive that support. The word ‘Hope’ in the title represents actual social workers and trained professionals to be an extra lifeline to pull you through the hardest stages of your life because you are not alone. I have suffered from thoughts of suicide for twenty-eight years and was healed by God’s Grace, so I know where many of you are coming from when you think that there is no way out. There IS a way out.
My sincerest condolences go out to family or friends who have lost a loved one or loved ones through suicide. I lost a close cousin twelve years ago and three college friends almost eighteen years ago, so I finally decided to seek help and a better understanding about this by attending a TalkSafe course. Although I am not a counsellor or a psychologist, I am here to listen to you and can put you onto people who are qualified and more than happy to help.
My message is ‘Suicide can be prevented by speaking about the way you feel about yourself to those you can trust.’ Suicide should be discussed and managed openly. There is so much information out there to help you. Behind me is all the information that I would love to share with you today. Suicide should be brought to the surface, that way our loved ones would be safe, “in knowing that there is hope and there is help!”
