An upgrade to Muriwai Motor Camp expected to get underway later this week is set to draw more campers into the area.
Once completed, the campground will have a more efficient layout and be equipped with new showers, toilet blocks, laundry, kitchen, BBQ areas and the latest addition, a fish cleaning station.
The redevelopment of the Auckland Council owned site is being managed by Panuku Development Auckland and follows a recent review of the buildings at the campground showing many were in poor condition and required considerable maintenance.
Stephen Bell, Western Principal Ranger at Auckland Council, says the upgrade to facilities and services in the motor camp is well overdue.
“With a design approach that draws upon the area’s natural surroundings, the new and improved site will greatly improve the camping experience and make it even more of a drawcard.”
Penny Webster, Councillor for the Rodney Ward, says it’s great to the see the motor camp is to be refreshed.
“Whether it’s mountain biking or surfing, with more and more people discovering all that Auckland’s rugged west coast has to offer it’s important we provide a range of quality accommodation options to encourage a longer stay in the area.”
“In this sense, any increase in visitor numbers and enjoyment that can come from these improvements to the Muriwai Motor Camp will be great for local businesses and community.”
The planned building renewal work will be conducted through the off peak season during the winter months and is expected to re-open for next summer 2016/17. The refurbishment is also being timed to coincide with the expiry of the current licence to operate the camp, with an expression of interest process to be carried out prior to the re-opening of the facility.
