We are sorry for those who missed our seminar at South Head Golf Club. It was an excellent day enjoyed by all. Although the numbers were quite small, it was quality not quantity! Bernice Mene gave an excellent presentation and what a great ambassador for New Zealand she is. Bernice spoke about her life, and the importance of in one’s life one has to dream, follow through, and reward. In the New Year we will endeavour to have another seminar and it will be about goal setting.
Retirement Planning – in our last article we mentioned that it wasn’t all about numbers, though they do play an important part when you are establishing your goals. Whilst retirement is a time to have fun and reflect on your life, what message will you leave for others?
Many retirees have a very happy retirement, others not so happy. This comes down partly to attitude towards one’s circumstances.
Let’s look at a random sample of what will happen in 30 years’ time to 100 kiwi’s (now aged 30):
1 will be “really wealthy” – we are talking Alan Gibbs, Graeme Hart etc
5 will be financially independent
11 will be deceased
27 will still be working – either by choice or necessity
56 will be solely dependent on welfare – this is why we need to plan and follow through on retirement.

This is the reason why Prosperity Partners Trust is passionate about retirement planning. Most of us bury our heads and as a nation, don’t really talk about it. Our younger people need to start planning their retirement early on and with the event of Kiwisaver; this has certainly assisted many New Zealanders.
The questions one needs to ask when facing retirement are:
1. Do I have enough income to support myself for 30 years, or longer?
2. Am I going to receive an inheritance?
3. Do I need to sell my house? Where do I want to live?
4. How robust is my health?
5. How secure is my income stream, or is my business worth as much as I think it is?
6. How well is my superannuation fund/Kiwisaver performing?
Retirement is about time, and we all eventually run out of time. The earlier you start, the better off you will be.
