The Easter celebration of Te Whare Oranga o Parakai’s first year in operation saw the launch of the South Kaipara Community Economic Development Scheme’s Hot House Project, described by Community Economic Development Manager Ian Leader as “a creative space to dream up and create ‘for profit’ and/or ‘for good’ ideas, enterprise and activity with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on food and wellbeing.”
Based at Te Whare Oranga o Parakai and open from 7am to 7pm, the project offers members access to office and meeting facilities without having to take on the costs of a permanent space.
For the first year there is a special membership fee of $150. This entitles members to access the business lounge, hot desks, printing and copying facilities (charges may apply), specialist information, free WiFi, complimentary tea and coffee, preferential room and facility hire rates and member events.
“We want to ‘steal’ jobs from the CBD and reduce or eliminate the need for people to grind into the city every day,” says volunteer project team member Brent Bailey. “Rather than just being a ‘desk for hire’, we want the Hot House to be a community of people who are passionate about their work and about making the South Kaipara a fantastic place to live, work and play.”
