After a second Mataia Restoration Project kiwi was killed by a ferret a massive effort was mounted to catch the culprit/s. Fortunately, the combined efforts of mustelid trapping experts, dog conservation handlers, a kiwi ranger and many others paid off when a young adult male ferret was eventually caught. Intensive trapping efforts are ongoing and the MRP is pleased that the project has received a permit to continue putting transmitters on the kiwi in their care. Three of the five remaining kiwi fitted with transmitters are incubating and hopes are high that the project will continue to flourish unimpeded.
